The 1967 anime television series Speed Racer (Japanese
マッハGoGoGo) featured a race car named Mach 5 ("Mahha
Gō"). The car was equipped with a number of unusual devices,
each activated through the press of a lettered button in the center of
the steering wheel.
Although many of these devices are portrayed unrealistically, one in particular appears remarkably prescient. The button labeled G, short for Go Homing Robot (ギズモ号, Gizumo-gō, Gizmo), launches a robotic bird (what today we would call a drone) from the hood of the car. The homing robot is capable of extended flight, carrying objects or tape recorded messages, either internally or externally. It is operated by a set of controls located within the center console of the Mach 5. The homing robot is controlled via a joystick, two unlabeled switches and a button labeled H, Homing Device (ホーミング, Hōmingu, Homing), that commands the homing robot to fly "home" to a pre-programmed location, typically Speed Racer's house.
